The battle for the David Lord trophy has been run and won for another year. The Carey 1st XI team regaining the trophy they lost to OCCC last year.
Dino won the toss and elected to field. This looked a masterstroke as the lethal combination caught Merry bowled Marshall struck on the first ball of the innings. Pig rattled the stumps 2 overs later to reduce the school to 2/5 early on. Michael Tuomy bowled tightly at the other end and was rewarded soon after, again rattling the poles with a nice little in dipper. At 3/20 the school steadied with a few solid partnerships aided by some wayward overs and put together 7/184 from their allotted 40 overs. The wicket takers for OCCC were Marshall and Garrett with 2, Tuomy, Bell, Zadnik with 1 a piece.
The run chase didn’t start well with Rory run out for 0, Â Huggy bowled for 2, Banger LBW for 1 & Charlie Hay bowled for 0. Tad & Sleethy came together with the score at 2/9 from 9 overs and put together a 63 run partnership for the 5th wicket before Sleethy holed out for 24 in an attempt to move the scoring rate along. Dino came in cracked a boundry then was rapped on the knuckles forcing a retirement due to his swollen digit. Alex “Puzzles” Bell came to the crease and made the game look easy slapping three consecutive 4’s over square leg before he was done in by a slower delivery. Kurt & Tad ended up not out 0 & 62 respectively as we limped to 7/123 from our 40 overs.
Not the result the old boys were after, however the match was played in great spirits and was an enjoyable day for all involved.
From the clubs point of view we would like to wish all the current Carey 1st XI players all the best with their upcoming season and hope to see you pulling the Cheesehead on for OCCC soon.
The battle will continue next year where we will no doubt be hungry to grab our trophy back.
