Great tight bowling performance and didn’t miss a beat with 9 not out to bring the innings home. |
With a firm grip on 2nd place and Surrey Hills currently holding the spoon, this match was seen as an opportunity to possibly pinch an outright win. Sonny won the toss and sent Surrey Hills in to bat. That was about the only thing that went our way for day one. With four catches being put down and a controversial not out on a clear caught behind, our chances of going for an outright dwindled as the day went on. For the most part the bowling was good. Ali, Curry and Liam were tight and Sonny bowled 7 maidens from 12 overs.
Surrey Hills struggled along losing wickets at regular intervals until a tail-ender made a quick 45 to take the score from 155 to 214 in the last 12 overs. The target was slightly more than what it should have been but with our batting line up, a par score appeared to be around 300+.
With an opening stand of 99, China and Piggy should be commended for putting the target quickly within reach and taking away any pressure that might have otherwise been placed on the middle order. Piggy eventually hit one too many pull shots and was caught at backward square leg on the boundary for 64. Woody come in and was the only batsmen not to get a start with just 6. Curiously this was the first time he has been dismissed by Surrey Hills in his batting career.
Curry come in and made his customary flurry of quick runs (33) to further release the pressure before being caught out spooning a lolly to mid-on. Puops, the most unlucky batsmen ever, come in and made good start and was looking solid. China was caught shortly after for (45) and Sonny come in.
Sonny and Poups moved the score close to the target adding 28 before Sonny set off for a sharp single and Poups was last seen going an impression of a jogger on the tread-mill. Only joking Poups, I’m saving your big innings until finals for you.
Ali come in and made a quick 9 not out, and Sonny 24 not out, when the target of 215 was attained.
A small challenge was presented by this run chase and the loss of wickets between 100 and 168 presented some pressure for the batsmen that followed. As a team we responded well and made the total comfortably.
Unfortunately that meant that a number of blokes were again starved of the opportunity for some time out in the middle.
Get to training fellas, you never know what situation we might be in next week, and you may be called upon to make that all important contribution to the team.
